Youtube series “Good Mythical Morning” has released close to 1900 episodes in the short nine years it’s been around, a very impressive feat in my book. Over the span of these nine years, Rhett and Link have developed many different episodes and games, but not all are successful enough or funny enough to return.

There are probably around 10 games that I think of as quintessential GMM; the things I picture when someone mentions the show. About half are food related, as food content started to become part of Rhett and Link’s “brand” so to speak, and the second half are various other games or activities they love to play. Today I’ll list and break down my favorite food series on GMM and the ones I think are instant classics!

“In-N-Out Animal Style Mac N’ Cheese Recipe | Mythical Kitchen” Mythical Kitchen, Jan. 20, 2020

Starting off with one of Rhett and Link’s most popular segments, and one that is sure to always bring chaos, the Will It? series! These episodes are pretty simple: Mythical Chef Josh (or other Mythical Crew members before Josh was hired) take a food, for example macaroni and cheese, and they try and see what other foods they can turn into macaroni and cheese. This particular episode contained Animal Style mac & cheese, Kit-Kat mac & cheese, Brick mac & cheese, Cockroach mac, and finally, Breast Milk mac and cheese. As you can probably tell, a lot of those are not good foods. “Will It’s” usually contain one or two good dishes, one or two mediocre, and then one appalling dish that no one would ever want to eat.

The first episode of “Will It”, “Will it Taco,” set the standard for this, as the last dish served was pork blood tacos. They just ate straight-up strips of congealed pork blood in a taco shell, and then proceeded to violently vomit it right back out.

Some other food “Will It’s” include: Ice cream sandwiches, cereal, cheesecake (a personal favorite,) donut, pizza, corn dog, pasta, omelette, milk, BBQ (another personal favorite,) bagel, and funnel cake. The list could go on and on, as there are around 85 different episodes of “Will It.” These episodes don’t just have to be food though. GMM has also done Will It chair, shoe, hair gel, slip-n-slide, slime, christmas tree, piñata, vacuum seal, valentine, and jack-o’-lantern.

“Alternate Universe Snacks Taste Test” Good Mythical Morning, July 17, 2020

The next segment I think is a classic, is the “Alternate Universe Snacks Taste Test.” These episodes started after Rhett and Link traveled to an alternate dimension and brought back snacks similar to ones from Earth, but with something fundamental changed about them. An example of this is Wheat Thins from our dimension, but Wheat Thicks, a large, hard loaf of wheat, from the alternate dimension. Another example is Lucky Charms, but from the other universe, Cursed Charms, and all black cereal.

These episodes are a lot of fun and after each round Rhett and Link have to decide on whether or not the snack is a “Snack Offension,” or a “Delicious Dimension.” The foods can get pretty crazy, so it is always fun to see what the Mythical Kitchen team can create, and also fun to see the packaging for each creation, as the art department always creates stunning replications of each package.

Another set of episodes is the “Discontinued Snacks Taste Test” series. This series is exactly what the name sounds like, eating snacks that were previously discontinued. Episodes generally start out with a food that was only discontinued recently, in the past five years or so. Then as the episode goes on, the foods get older and older.

In a recent episode, Rhett and Link ate Kellogs cereal from the 1940’s! They generally acquire these foods off of Ebay, sometimes having to pay $99 or more, like they did for the Kellogs cereal. After Rhett and Link eat the food, they either decide to “Bring it Back” or “Nah, that’s Wack.”

A lot of the old foods contain a wonky smell and taste, which Rhett and Link have dubbed “the Boggs smell.” This originated after they ate a 29 year old chocolate bar with baseball player Wade Boggs on it. They started making jokes about the Wade Boggs bar because of how awful it tasted and smelled, as it was 29 years old. The joke stuck and now the scent is known as the “Boggs” scent.

The next quintessential GMM series, and one of my favorites, is the “Blindfold Taste Test” series. In this series, Rhett and Link are blindfolded and fed different foods. Each episode has a category such as, chicken sandwiches, burritos, pizza, etc. If it was the chicken sandwich episode, they’d have six different chicken sandwiches, each one from a different popular fast food chicken restaurant. Rhett and Link are then fed each sandwich and have to guess which restaurant each one is from, and also score the sandwiches to see which one reigns supreme.

These episodes are always pretty funny, and usually get pretty competitive. For some reason it’s just fun to watch two men in their forties eat food and goof around with each other.

The last series to discuss today is the “International Taste Tests.” These episodes involve a dart board and international food, a perfect combination.

“International Hot Dog Taste Test” Good Mythical Morning, Aug. 17, 2020

Each episode has a theme, like school lunches, Taco Bell, sauces, ice cream, and many others. It begins with Rhett and Link being presented with a food from a certain country, but they are not told what country the food is from. They then eat the food, and have to deduce where in the world the food is from. To help narrow down the search, the country will be highlighted on the dart board in front of them. To indicate their guess of which country the food’s from, Rhett and Link have to throw their dart at the country of their choice on the map. However many centimeters away their dart landed from the correct country, is how many points Rhett or Link get for that round.

This game gets SUPER competitive, probably because Rhett has won significantly more episodes than Link, probably having won more than double of what Link has. The competitiveness always makes it more interesting and gets you more invested in the outcome which makes the episode more entertaining.

Because Link always (well not always) loses, he gets a special advantage dart. This is a tool designed to help him win, but it is not always successful. In early episodes of the game, the special advantage dart was usually a fart, or four darts, but as the game has gone on, it has evolved. Now, it is usually a food relating to the game, like a hot dog slathered with mustard if it’s the hot dog episode, that gets to be thrown at the board. Then, whatever bits of mustard splatter are closest to the correct answer get to count as your guess for the round.

These segments make for some of the best episodes of GMM, and there are so many more that I could talk about, but these are some of the best, quintessential food-related games. I hope some more episodes of these segments come out soon, because they always manage to brighten my day!
